Live Traps
We don’t sell killing traps for squirrels. Such squirrel traps are fine in the hands of professionals; but most of our squirrel trap customers are not professionals, and it’s hard for us to assess the risk involved to pets, children, and even unwary adults. What’s more, live squirrel traps work well and can do essentially the same task safely. The smaller squirrel trap below (product T-18) is well suited to trapping the red squirrel and flying squirrel, while the larger ones (products T-19 and T-20) are good for catching the fox squirrel, gray squirrel, and ground squirrels. The Havahart traps listed below have a top-of-the-line reputation with good reason. All models come fully assembled and are easy to bait, set, and release. Their spring-loaded doors have sensitive triggers to make quick, secure catches; the steel-reinforced high-tensile wire mesh construction is designed for a long life and maximum resistance to damage; and the smooth inside edges protect trapped animals. One or more of these traps should be set with sunflower seeds or unshelled peanuts and should be placed in areas frequented by the squirrels you wish to catch or along paths commonly used by them. If you opt for live release, captured squirrels should be released far away, some say as far away as seven miles, in order to ensure they do not return. |
